“Hey, Little Girl.”
It was the summer of 2005. This was before Facebook and Twitter. Smart phones didn’t exist and either did Brangelina. Justin Timberlake had yet to bring sexy back or attempt to bring MySpace back.
I was sitting on my bed, laptop on my knees, listening to “Here Without You” by Three Doors Down, which had been on repeat for nearly an hour. Because that kind of music was totally going to cheer me up.
It had been one week since I’d found out the truth, five days since I’d taken the last final exam of my junior year at UNC, four days since I’d been back in Ann Arbor, and two days since I’d brushed my hair.
The word “moderation” had never applied to me. When I did something, I went all the way with it. At that moment I was the archetype of pitiful.
When I heard the familiar voice and the nickname he’d been using since childhood, I looked up to see my brother’s best friend, Jake Odom, standing in the doorway to my bedroom.
He smiled at me.
And just like that my room was a little brighter, a little warmer, a little lighter. Jake had that way about him. With his smile he could change the world. He sure changed mine.
