Beautiful Disaster meets Nikita.

Leigh Thorn is hiding out in a backwoods college because her father put her in danger, and if the wrong people find her, she’s dead. She’d rather snort lines than think about that. She’d rather do shots of marshmallow-flavored vodka until she can’t remember.

When Griffin Fawkes arrives with the news that her father’s dead, she isn’t sure if she cares. He wasn’t much of a father anyway. The only silver lining here is that Griffin’s jaw-droppingly gorgeous, and Leigh wants him bad.

Griffin owes his life to Leigh’s father. The man begged him to keep his daughter safe. But Griffin didn’t expect a cocaine-fueled party girl who barely seems to care about her own safety. It seems like she’d rather destroy herself than anything else.

Even worse, he didn’t expect he’d care about her. He knows he’s too damaged to ever really be with a woman. The best he can do is to make sure she’s safe from whoever could hurt her. Including herself. Including himself.

Of course, fighting off men with guns is starting to seem easier than keeping his hands off Leigh.

Time for me to be completely honest. When I first picked up this book I was super excited. It claimed “Beautiful Disaster meets Nikita”. I never watched Nikita, but Beautiful Disaster is, well, you know…ah-maze-ing! I started to read Slow Burn and didn’t even feel a spark, forget about a burn. Then just as I was about to return the book to the shelf… BAM! It erupted into a full on blaze.

The girl…
Leigh Thorn, known to some as Leigh Dunn, is a hardcore party girl. She’s addicted to cocaine and marshmallow flavored vodka. She has a love hate relationship with her father who works for Dewhurst-McFarland, a company that produces guns along with some other top secret items. Leigh is forced into hiding by her absentee father after he injects her with a serum to save her life. What a super dad right? Well, the serum was actually created to make “super soliders” or really assassins. These assassins are part of a sector called Operation Wraith. Needless to say Frank Thorn’s company was less than thrilled to find he’d stolen the serum and given to his out of control child.

“He was like a thug or something. A thug. A tall, muscled, threatening, really attractive thug.”

The guy…
Griffin thinks he owes Frank Thorn for helping him escape Operation Wraith. In turn he’s made it his mission to protect Leigh at all costs. He isn’t expecting a party girl who doesn’t value her own life. More importantly, he definitely didn’t plan to fall hard for her. Griffin’s past is something that he doesn’t want to talk about. He’s been through things no man should ever have to endure. Could Leigh be the one to put his broken life back together?

“No,” I said. “No, I don’t think so. My father’s dead. I’m being chased by the men who killed them. I’m being protected by a guy who has no problem getting me shot, who’s able to turn off his guilt whenever he wants. I’m not fine.”

I wasn’t lying when I said that Slow Burn starts out…slow. V.J. Chambers really didn’t grab my attention until about half way through the novel, but once she had it, she didn’t let it go! I wasn’t sold on the idea of a serum which created invincible people (more or less). It just seemed so far fetched and flat out cheesy, but the more I read the more I could grasp the concept.

I found myself both loving and completely hating Griffin. He was almost two different men wrapped up in a pretty package. Harnessing the ability to shut off all emotions and attachments, he could really become a bastard. Then at times he’d let his sweeter side show and melt your heart just a little more.

If you love action and you enjoy a good love story, I’d recommend you check this book out. Just remember that it may not rock your world right from the start. Don’t give up on Slow Burn. See it through till the end and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

About the Author
My name is Lauren Sweeney and I am obsessed with reading. Really! I could read all day everyday. There is something so therapeutic about getting lost in the pages of a book or in my case, the screen of a Kindle. The funny part is when I was growing up you couldn't have paid me to read a sentence let alone an entire novel. I am a proud military wife and a stay-a-home mommy to a very active four year old with a killer imagination. She keeps me on my toes and has helped me both lose and find my marbles from time to time. I don’t know what I would do without her smile. I also have the pleasure of playing momma to four very furry children. They never fail to make my life just a little more interesting. I love tattoos and music in any form. I’m very easy going and am fluent in sarcasm. I tend to gravitate to Young Adult, Contemporary and Chick Lit novels.
